This very collectable wall clock is an unsigned original Massachusetts banjo clock which is attributed to Horace Tifft based on the movement design. It has an E. Howard style mahogany case with a beautiful grain, black and gold glasses and is in excellent condition. Engraved in the case is the number 12 and it is not clear what it means, but could mean 12th clock made. It retains its original white painted iron dial which has some chips and a uniform patina with excellent numbers. It has a wood bezel and the glass is old but most likely a replacement. The throat glass has a reverse painting with gold gilt that has been restored. The bottom glass has its original reverse black and gold painting. The gold gilt on the eagle has some wear. The original heavy brass pendulum has an unique engraved design of scrolls, leaves and a primitive sun. The movement is a time only and is powered by a lead weight. Circa: 1875. Horace Tifft made banjo clocks in two distinct periods. He started in 1825 and stopped in 1845 to pursue a business in jewelry. He resumed clockmaking in 1857 and retired in 1881 at the age of 77. This clock was made during the latter period and is a fine example of the E. Howard styling of the day. H: 32", W: 11 1/4", D: 3 3/4" PRICE: $2750 Refer to: #553
