From the editor : Thousands of years ago, civilizations were already flourishing in the Arabian Peninsula. The great city kingdoms of the south included rich, powerful Saba (or Sheba) whose merchants knew the secret of the monsoon winds and carried silks and spices from India and China to the western world.

In the north, the nomads of the desert lived in proud independence with their camels and horses, fiercely loyal to their tribes and with their own special codes of behaviour.

Later, as the religion of Islam spread through the world, the Arabs built up a great empire, stretching as far as Spain in the west and to the boundaries of China in the east.

Throughout history, the Arabs have been great storytellers. These tales, told long ago around camp fires and in cities and palaces that now lie buried in the shifting sands, are as fascinating today as ever.
