Phillips 66 Oil Company

DID YOU KNOW? Phillips is the only major oil company still named for its founder, Frank Phillips. It was 1905 when the Phillips brothers hit the first of 81 wells in a row without a single dry hole. The Phillips Oil Company was founded a few years later in 1917. Phillips did not begin marketing gasoline in its own service stations until 1927, which in time grew to be more than 10,000. Propane, which people still use for heating and cooking today in rural areas, was first developed by the Phillips Company in 1929. As to the question why the number 66 is used in their name, it seems no one knows how it got started or what it stood for. One of the products Phillips Chemical Company developed was the plastic called marlex. You probably never hear of it, that is, unless you bought one of those popular "Hula Hoops" back around 1958. Marlex was the plastic used in making the hoop. Framed in hardwood, the picture measures 16 1/4 x 15 3/4 inches. Three different mat colors add to the picture's appearance. Included in this picture is an art print of a Phillips 66 station, a Phillips 66 patch and a special issue envelope commemorating the 140th anniversary of the petroleum industry and 4 cent petroleum industry stamp which are 41 years old (August 27, 1959).
