Silver Classic Motorcycle

DID YOU KNOW? Living in Milwaukee were two friends, William Harley, 21, and Arthur Davidson, 20. In 1903 they teamed up and began experimenting on "taking the work out of bicycling." In 1903 the company Harley-Davidson was founded, with only 3 motorcycles being made the first year. In 1904 production began behind the Davidson family home on a motorcycle named, "Silent Gray Fox." By 1909, the Harley-Davidson V-Twin engine would reach a top speed of 60 mph. During World War I, 20,000 cycles were supplied the U.S. forces. In 1941, Harley-Davidson's entire production went to supplying Allied Forces in World War II, which by war's end totaled about 90,000 machines. The teardrop shaped gas tank made its debut in 1925. Since the introduction of the first cycle in 1903, Harley-Davidson has become synonymous with American motorcycling. Professionally framed in solid oak is this motorcycle picture, plus an official Harley patch, and an envelope commemorating the 91st year of the American motorcycle. Three stamps are used in this picture, a motorcycle stamp, an eagle stamp, and the official issued special delivery 13 cent stamp (56 years old) depicting a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Three mat colors have been chosen to compliment this 15 1/4 x 20 inch picture.
